I have mixed feelings about the project we did. The 8 apartments we painted were for low income and disabled adults...mostly seniors although there was one middle-aged woman in a wheelchair. These people clearly could not have do this for themselves and they were (with one small exception) very happy with what we were doing. BUT they were living in a housing project, with a staff of maintenance personnel employed by the city. The housing authority has a rule, however, that they ONLY paint when a unit is vacant. Some of these people had lived there for 15+ years! 15 YEARS between paint jobs...it was well needed but these are CITY owned properties. The fact that they won't do this sort of routine maintenance leaves me a bit less excited about what we did. The need was great and I'm glad we did it, I'm just angry that the need existed. The city should be maintaining these units. I love Habitat too, awesome organization.
