Fragile X Associated Disorders

What are the Fragile X Associated Disorders (FXD)?

It’s a family of disorders that affect men and women with either the pre or full mutation of the fragile x gene. Approximately 1 in 800 men and 1 in 260 women in the world are carriers.

Fragile X Syndrome (FXS)

  • The leading known genetic cause of intellectual disability resulting from a full mutation of the fragile X gene.

Autism Spectrum Disorder Associated with FXS (ASD)

  • The only known genetic cause of autism resulting from a full mutation of the Fragile X gene.

Fragile X Associated Primary Ovarian Insufficiency (FXPOI)

  • Early menopause and decreased fertility resulting from a premutaion of the fragile X gene.

Fragile X Associated Tremor/Ataxia Syndrome (FXTAS)

  • Neurological condition resulting in Parkinson’s like tremors and balance and memory problems resulting from a premutation of the Fragile X gene.
