He did it!

He wore underwear allll night and stayed dry allll night.  I am so proud of him!

He was adament last night that he did not want the diaper. “No, No, No!  Back!  Away!”  lol   So we took the plunge two days early.

Then, after he was up and moving around, he pooped in his boxers.  Ah, well…we’ll get there too.  We had been feeling a bit frustrated about this because the toileting specialist has told us repeatedly that the bowel movements are the easy part.  Just sit them on the potty for 5-10 minutes after a meal and presto chango!  Poop in the potty!

The problem, of course, is that Monkey is not going anywhere near meals.  He’s going before breakfast, he’s going two hours after lunch, he’s going pretty much…whenever.  So.

I mentioned our potty success this AM to his teacher and the subsequent issue and she reassured us that it’s totally normal ((One of the classroom assistants, who has been doing this for 30+ years actually laughed when we told them what the potty specialist has said)).  She said that the bowel movements are the hardest part for the kids to master, in  her experience.  In 8 years of teaching special needs classes she has surely potty trained more children than we have, lol, so we’re going with that.  He’ll get there when he’s emotionally ready for it.  We know he can sense it and there are no more consistency issues…he just needs to mature a bit.

I think we’ll return that box of diapers and let Monkey spend the money…maybe we can convince him to let us buy him some more underwear too, lol.

I read in the Fragile X Syndrome book, 3rd Edition, that the poop
training normally comes before the pee training in FX kids. Hmph! I disagree as well. Ian is doing well (no overnights in underwear however …way to go Monkey!) But he is definitely going more often as we send him. But pooping!!!! Nope! I think he may have actually tried once, but that was after seeing Avery sit and go. I think the poop issue is one issue that is going to remain a typical thing across the board. Finally, one thing! Hee hee. How old is Monkey now?

Seriously, to pick one area to be “typical” did it have to be the poop one? Kids!

Monkey has progressed in this area actually. He has pooped on the potty but ONLY when we catch him. Initially, when we’d put him on the potty when we caught him he wouldn’t go…until we gave up and he’d go in his pants. Now he’ll at least finish if we catch him.

Monkey will be 5 in 3 months. Ack!

Speaking about being 5 in 3 months — Birthday Party Sat or Sun and Where??

You will then be registering him for “Kindergarten” or will that be incorporated into his already established format.

We’re not sure on the birthday party yet. We’re trying to do one year at home and the next in Maine since neither of his great grandfathers feel comfortable making the long trip. This would be the year to have it at home so Great Grampy can be there. We’re also thinking about doing party with classmates this year. We just need to figure out the logistics. I do, however, know what the theme will be, lol.

Kindergarten registration closed in January. We had already been offered (and had accepted) a spot in his current classroom for next year. All the boys will be staying for another year and he’s doing so well that it was a no brainer for us. We’re running on the assumption that he’ll be in school until he’s 22 at this point so we thought we might as well add an extra year of preschool.
